Winter Respiratory Infections – Causes, Symptoms & Prevention

December marks the beginning of peak winter-related respiratory illnesses. Cold, dry air reduces natural moisture in the nasal passages and throat, weakening the body’s first line of defense. This makes individuals more vulnerable to common infections such as the flu, common cold, viral bronchitis, and worsening of asthma symptoms.

Causes

Low humidity: Dry air irritates the airways and lowers mucus barrier effectiveness.

Indoor crowding: People spend more time indoors with poor ventilation.

Seasonal viruses: Influenza, RSV, rhinovirus, and seasonal coronaviruses circulate more in winter. Symptoms

  • Persistent cough

  • Nasal congestion or runny nose

  • Fever

  • Sore throat

  • Wheezing or shortness of breath (more common in asthma/COPD patients)

Prevention

  • Maintain indoor humidity at healthy levels if possible.

  • Wash hands frequently.

  • Use a mask in crowded indoor spaces.

  • For eligible individuals, get the annual flu vaccine — the CDC and WHO both recommend it for preventing influenza.

  • Stay hydrated; warm fluids help soothe the airway lining.

  • Avoid sudden exposure to cold air; cover the nose and mouth when stepping outside.

When to See a Doctor

  • High fever lasting more than 48 hours

  • Shortness of breath

  • Persistent wheezing

  • Chest discomfort

  • Severe fatigue or dehydration
